Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French regitif; Latin regitivus.
Etymology: < Middle French regitif ruling, controlling (1362–5 in vertu regitive faculty controlling the body and mind, faculty of reason, c1400 in general sense ‘controlling force’) and its etymon post-classical Latin regitivus that directs, controls, or governs, governing (from c1200 in British sources, frequently in virtus regitivus (also 1363 in Chauliac: see quot. ?a1425)), that directs the affairs of, governing, ruling, of or relating to governance or rule (from c1250 in British sources), irregularly < classical Latin regere to rule (see regent adj.) + -īvus -ive suffix.
