Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin registrator.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin registrator person who registers, scribe, clerk (12th or 13th cent.; from 14th cent. in British sources) < registrat- , past participial stem of registrare register v. + classical Latin -or -or suffix. Compare Dutch registrator (1732; perhaps via German), German Registrator (1st half of the 18th cent. or earlier), French régistrateur (1798, with reference to ancient Rome).
A person who registers (in various senses). Cf. registerer n.In quot. 1870 as a title.
