Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Spanish lexical item. Etymons: register n.1, ship n.1
Etymology: < register n.1 + ship n.1, after Spanish navío de registro (1648 or earlier). Compare Dutch registerschip ship whose cargo was registered (1717), Spanish cargo ship licensed to trade with America (1793 or earlier), German Registerschiff ship with registered cargo (1757), Spanish ship licensed to trade with America (1781), all ultimately after Spanish.

In the 18th cent.: a Spanish ship with a special licence authorizing it to trade outside the fleet system with the Spanish possessions in America, in specified areas or countries.The cargo of a register ship had to be specified to the Board of Trade, the body controlling all Spanish trade with the West Indies, according to both nature and volume.
