Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; partly modelled on an Italian lexical item. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin rēmigium , -al suffix¹; Latin rēmiges , rēmex , -ial suffix; remigium n., -al suffix¹.

Etymology: Originally (in quot. 1592 at sense 1) < classical Latin rēmigium action of rowing ( < rēmigare remigate v. + -ium : see -y suffix⁴) + -al suffix¹, after Italian remigale (1545 in the passage translated in quot. 1592); compare also Italian remigio rhythmic motion of the wings of birds in flight (1598 in Florio). In later use in sense 1 < classical Latin rēmiges, plural of rēmex (see remex n.) + -ial suffix. In sense 2 < remigium n. + -al suffix¹.
