Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin reginalis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin reginalis of a queen, queenly (9th cent.; from c1100 in British sources), royal (14th cent.) < classical Latin rēgīna queen (see Regina n.) + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare Middle French reginal (1382), Old Occitan reginal queenly (1370), royal (14th cent.), Catalan reginal queenly (1399), Spanish †reginal queenly (1484).
