Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rēgīna.

Etymology: < classical Latin rēgīna queen < rēg- , rēx king (see rex n.¹) + -īna -ina suffix. Compare Reg. n.¹Latin Regina appears as part of the official signature of a reigning queen, postpositively following the forename of the monarch; it is frequently represented by the graphic abbreviation R . With the legal use (sense 2) compare slightly earlier queen n. 3c.
