Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish rejón.
Etymology: < Spanish rejón lance, spear (c1400 as rrejon ) < rejo spike, pin (1462; compare regional (Leon or Aragon) reyllo bar (of gold) (1280); masculine form formed on the same base as reja ploughshare (10th cent. as relia ) < classical Latin rēgula rule, rod, bar: see regula n.) + -ón -oon suffix.
In Spain and Spanish-speaking countries: a short lance; (Bullfighting) a wooden-handled lance, usually one thrust at a bull from horseback.
