Etymology: < Anglo-Norman refrigerie place of coolness (first half of the 12th cent.), relief (13th cent.; compare Old French, Middle French refrigere , French †réfrigère refreshment, consolation) and its etymon classical Latin refrīgerium (see refrigerium n.). Compare Old Occitan refrigeri (14th cent.), Catalan refrigeri (13th cent.), Spanish refrigerio (13th cent.), Portuguese refrigerio (14th cent.), Italian refrigerio (14th cent.), all in general as well as religious senses.
Obsolete.
The action or process of cooling or refreshing something. Also: comfort, consolation.
