Origin: Of multiple origins. A borrowing from Japanese. Partly also a borrowing from German. Etymons: Japanese reishi; German Reishi.
Etymology: < Japanese reishi ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese língzhī lingzhi n.), originally via German Reishi (1886 in the passage translated in quot. 1889). Compare Japanese rei spiritual, divine, here specifically ‘miraculously efficacious’ (see reiki n.) and shi reishi fungus ( < Middle Chinese).
Any of several polypore fungi of the genus Ganoderma; esp. G. lucidum, which is typically found as a bracket fungus on decaying timber in Asia and North America (also more fully reishi mushroom). Also: a preparation or extract of this mushroom credited with immune-stimulating and other health-promoting properties, and used esp. in Chinese medicine.
