Etymology: < classical Latin remollient-, remolliēns, present participle of remollīre to make physically soft, soften, to weaken the resolution of < re- re- prefix + mollīre to soften (see mollient adj.). Compare Middle French, French remollient (a1590; now probably obsolete). With use as noun compare post-classical Latin remollient- , remolliens softening application (1682 in the passage translated in quot. 1684 at sense A.). Compare earlier remollition n. and remollitive adj. Compare also later mollient n., mollient adj., and emollient adj., emollient n.
