Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin refricāt-, refricāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin refricāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of refricāre to rub again, to make (wounds, etc.) sore again by rubbing, to excite (feelings) again < re- re- prefix + fricāre to rub (see fricate v.). Compare refrication n.
Obsolete.
transitive. To reopen (a wound) by rubbing (in quot. 1570 in figurative context). In earliest use and chiefly figurative: to renew or stir up again (an old antagonism, grief, a memory, etc.).
