Etymology: Either < classical Latin refract-, past participial stem of refringere (see refract v.) + -orious suffix, or < classical Latin refractārius refractary adj., with suffix substitution (compare -orious suffix). Compare later refractarious adj., and also later refractary adj., refractory adj.
Obsolete. rare in later use.
