Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French refoulement.
Etymology: < French refoulement instance of water overflowing or being dammed back (1771; 1580 in Middle French in sense ‘action of blunting’, 1611 in Cotgrave in sense ‘action of pushing back a charge of powder into the barrel of a gun’), forced relocation of a group of people (1837 in the source translated in quot. 1846 at sense 2), forcible return of refugees or asylum-seekers (1980 or earlier) < refouler to push or force back, to cause to turn or flow back (1611; c1175 in Old French in sense ‘(of the sea) to flow back’; < re- re- prefix + fouler foul v.2) + -ment -ment suffix. With sense 2 compare non-refoulement n.
