Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French remblai.
Etymology: < French remblai earth used to form a rampart, mound, or embankment (1779; 1694 in sense ‘construction of a rampart, mound, or embankment from earth’), rock, debris, etc., used to fill up the excavations made in a seam of coal (1798 or earlier) < remblayer to embank (1244 in Old French (Normandy) as remblaer ) < re- re- prefix + emblaer (see emblement n.). Compare déblai n.
1. Fortification. The earth used to form a rampart, mound, or embankment; the structure formed by this. Also, in extended use: the earth used to bring a depression in the ground up to a level.
