释义

reflexologyn.

Brit. /ˌriːflɛkˈsɒlədʒi/, U.S. /ˌriflɛkˈsɑlədʒi/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: reflex n., -ology comb. form.
Etymology: < reflex n. + -ology comb. form. With sense 1 compare quot. 1913, and later reflex n. 6c. In sense 2 after French réflexologie (1913 in a translation of a work by V. M. Bekhterev; this translation is the work reviewed in quot. 1914 at sense 2), itself after Russian refleksologija (1910 in psixorefleksologija, 1918 or earlier used independently, both in works by V. M. Bekhterev); compare also German Reflexologie (1912 in Psycho-Reflexologie).
1. Alternative Medicine. Originally: a form of medical treatment based on percussion of the spine and stimulation of spinal nerves (now historical). In later use: a form of complementary therapy in which the practitioner applies pressure to specific points on the feet (or, less commonly, the face or hands) in order to promote physical and mental health.Reflexology as a complementary therapy is based on a belief that there are reflex points on the feet, hands, and head connected to every part of the body, and that palpation of these points can diagnose and treat disorders of the connected parts.
