Origin: Probably either (i) a borrowing from Italian. Or (ii) a borrowing from Catalan. Or (iii) a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Italian riscattare; Catalan rescatar; Spanish rescatar.
Etymology: Probably < either Italian riscattare (a1348), Catalan rescatar (13th cent.), or Spanish rescatar (14th cent.), with remodelling after words in re- prefix; the Italian, Catalan, and Spanish words are probably ultimately < an unrecorded post-classical Latin form *reexcaptare < classical Latin re- re- prefix + ex- ex- prefix1 + captare to take, seize (see captate v.). Compare also Portuguese resgatar (15th cent.). Compare earlier resgat n.
Obsolete. rare.
