Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: red adj., pine n.2
Etymology: < red adj. + pine n.2 In sense 1(a) after French pin rouge (1683 or earlier with reference to such trees in Louisiana, 1744 or earlier with reference to such trees in Quebec). In sense 1(c) after Japanese akamatsu aka-matsu n.
1. Any of various pines or other conifers with reddish bark or wood; esp. (a) a North American pine, Pinus resinosa; also called Norway pine; (b) the rimu of New Zealand, Dacrydium cupressinum; (c) (more fully Japanese red pine) a Japanese pine, Pinus densiflora; (d) an Australian cypress pine, Callitris endlicheri. Also red pine tree.
