Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Adermin.

Etymology: < German Adermin (R. Kuhn and G. Wendt 1938, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 71 1534) < a- a- prefix⁶ + ancient Greek δέρμα skin (see derma n.) + German -in -in suffix¹, apparently so called because it acted to prevent a form of dermatitis in rats.

Biochemistry. Now rare.

1939 P. György & R. G. Eckardt in Nature 16 Sept. 512/2 The term adermin, because it is misleading, should be abandoned... The term pyridoxin appears to be appropriate.

1978 P. M. Robinson Pract. Fungal Physiol. v. 82 Pyridoxine (vitamin B₆, adermin) is required by fewer fungi than is biotin or thiamine.

2006 E. Kuntz & H.-D. Kuntz Hepatology (ed. 2) iii. 48/2 Three substances are classed under the term pyridoxine or adermine: pyridoxol, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine.
