Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew rĕ'ēm.
Etymology: < Hebrew rĕ'ēm wild ox.Rendered in the Septuagint by Hellenistic Greek μονόκερως (see monoceros n.), in the Vulgate by Latin unicornis and (more frequently) rhinoceros . In English versions from the 13th to 17th centuries translated as unicorn (see unicorn n. 1b). Compare ox-antelope n. at ox n. Compounds 2a and see discussion at that entry. Modern use of the name reem or reem gazelle for an Arabian antelope ( Gazella subgutturosa marica) derives from Arabic ri'm, rīm addax, white antelope.
A large, horned, ox-like animal mentioned in ancient Hebrew literature, variously identified with the aurochs ( Bos primigenius), the water buffalo (genus Bubalus), or the Arabian oryx ( Oryx leucoryx), or regarded as mythical.

2000 Harvard Theol. Rev. 93 315 God rescued the young shepherd, after he had been lifted aloft on the massive horns of a beast known as the reem.
