单词 reduviid
释义

reduviidn.adj.

Brit. /rɪˈdjuːvɪɪd/, U.S. /rəˈd(j)uviɪd/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Reduvius , -id suffix3.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Reduvius, genus name ( J. C. Fabricius Systema Entomologiæ (1775) 729; < post-classical Latin reduvia remnant, fragment (3rd or 4th cent.), transferred use of classical Latin reduvia hangnail, usually in plural, reduviae < red- , variant (before a vowel) of re- re- prefix + -uviae (in exuviae exuviae n.)) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Reduviidae, family name ( J. F. Stephens Systematic Catal. Brit. Insects (1829) II. 350); the genus name alludes to the habit of the nymph of Reduvius personatus of camouflaging itself with small pieces of debris.
