Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French reduit, réduit.
Etymology: In sense 1 < Middle French reduit (see below); in sense 2 < French réduit (although this is first recorded later in this sense in dictionaries of French: 1671), specific use of réduit secluded, recessed place (1176 in Old French as reduit ; c1150 in sense ‘way, road, track’), retreat, small lodging (13th cent.), place where people gather for conversation and entertainment (c1230), small, secluded room, recess (a1440) < post-classical Latin reductus refuge, hiding place, retreat (see redoubt n.). Compare French †reduite (feminine) blockhouse, little fort (1611 in Cotgrave). Compare also Old Occitan redutz (1364 in this sense). Compare reduct n. and redoubt n.
