Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin redemptric-, redemptrix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin redemptric-, redemptrix (4th cent.), feminine form corresponding to classical Latin redemptor redemptor n. (compare -trix suffix), immediately after Italian redentrice (1532 in the passage translated in quot. 1755). Compare French †redemptrice (1687 in an apparently isolated attestation, denoting the Virgin Mary). Compare earlier redeemeress n. at redeemer n. Derivatives and later redemptress n.
