Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French remplacer.
Etymology: < French remplacer to put (a thing) back in place (1607; 1606 in sense ‘to put (a thing) in another place’; < re- re- prefix + emplacer emplace v.), with alteration after words in im- prefix1. Compare earlier replace v., and later emplace v.
Now rare.
