Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rectus.
Etymology: In sense 1 < post-classical Latin rectus rectus muscle (1552 or earlier), use as noun (short for musculus rectus : see below) of masculine of classical Latin rectus straight, right (see rect adj.). In sense 2 apparently directly < classical Latin rectus straight, right; compare rectus et inversus adj., and earlier recte and retro adv., per recte et retro adj.With rectus muscle at Compounds compare post-classical Latin musculus rectus (1552 or earlier).
1. In humans and other vertebrates: any of various straight muscles (typically rectangular in shape and located parallel or perpendicular to the long axis of the body), esp. of the abdominal wall, thigh, eye, and neck. Frequently with scientific Latin or English distinguishing word or words, indicating the location of the muscle.See also rectus abdominis n., rectus femoris n.
