Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: rector n., -ate suffix1.
Etymology: < rector n. + -ate suffix1, probably after either post-classical Latin rectoratus office of rector (1382 with reference to a provincial rector, 1431 in a British source with reference to an ecclesiastical rector) or French rectorat office of a rector (a1615), period of office as rector (1642). Compare Italian rettorato (a1565). Compare earlier rectorship n.
