Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: rectum n., -o- connective.
Etymology: < rectum n. + -o- connective. Compare earlier procto- comb. form.Found in a small number of formations from the early 19th cent. onwards, earliest in rectovaginal adj. at sense 1, rectovesical adj., rectourethral adj. at sense 1. Compare French recto- (formations in which are also found from the early 19th cent.). Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin or Greek origin.
