Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: recti- comb. form, -grade comb. form.
Etymology: < recti- comb. form + -grade comb. form. Compare post-classical Latin rectigradus (7th cent. in a British source), French rectigrade (1829 in the passage translated in quot. 1834), †rectograde (1801).
Zoology (now rare).
Walking with the body or limbs in a straight line; spec. (a) (of an insect larva) not arching its body when walking (obsolete); (b) (of a spider) having legs adapted for walking forwards (cf. laterigrade adj., saltigrade adj.) (obsolete); (c) (of a quadruped) having the limb bones arranged in a vertical plane.
