Etymology: < post-classical Latin reductio ad impossibile (a1200 in a commentary on Aristotle: see below) < classical Latin reductiō reduction n. + ad to + impossibile the impossible, use as noun of neuter of impossibilis impossible adj., after ancient Greek ἡ εἰς τὸ ἀδύνατον ἀπαγωγή (Aristotle Analytica Priora 29b5). Compare reductio ad absurdum n.
