Etymology: < post-classical Latin reducent-, reducens (of a vessel) carrying blood back to the heart (1685 in the passage translated in quot. 1720 at sense A. 1), (in chemistry) that reduces (1739 in the passage translated in quot. 1741 at reducing adj. 1), use as adjective of classical Latin redūcent-, redūcēns, present participle of redūcere reduce v. Compare reductive adj.
