recryv.

Brit. /riːˈkrʌɪ/, U.S. /ˌriˈkraɪ/
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: re- prefix, cry v.
Etymology: < re- prefix + cry v. With sense 2 compare earlier recry n. N.E.D. (1904) entered quot. 1568 at sense 1 under recryat, tentatively suggesting that the form recryat might be a transmission error for an intended form *recryant , which it considered a loan < Middle French recreantir to grow weak, to yield (1587; 1534 as recreandir , both used reflexively; end of the 13th cent. in Old French as recreandir , used intransitively; < recreant recreant adj.). However, it is more likely that recryat simply represents a transmission error for recry it , the form in the later edition. See discussion in P. Bawcutt Poems of William Dunbar (1998) II. 433, who additionally suggests possible influence of earlier recray v. (compare recray v. 2). For semantic parallels, compare e.g. recall v. 1, revoke v. 3, 2.
