Etymology: < Middle French recreance recreation, rest, refreshment (14th cent.; compare Old French recriance pastime (13th cent.)) < récréer (see recreate v.1) + -ance -ance suffix. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (re·krĭˌăns) /ˈrɛkrɪəns/.
