Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: French rédaction , Latin redaction- , redactio ; Latin redact- , redigere , -ion suffix1.
Etymology: < French rédaction action of bringing or putting into a definite form, action of putting into writing (1534 in Middle French) < classical Latin redact- , past participial stem of redigere (see redact v.) + French -ion -ion suffix1, after Middle French rediger redige v. In sense 2, apparently either < post-classical Latin redaction-, redactio act of bringing back (4th cent.), arithmetic reduction (6th cent. in Boethius; < classical Latin redact- , past participial stem of redigere (see redact v.) + -iō -ion suffix1), or < classical Latin redact-, past participial stem of redigere + -ion suffix1.
