Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French recordance ; record v.1, -ance suffix.
Etymology: Probably partly < Middle French recordance memory, remembrance (13th cent. in Old French; < recorder record v.1 + -ance -ance suffix), and partly < record v.1 + -ance suffix. Compare post-classical Latin recordantia remembrance (4th cent.), Old Occitan recordansa (Occitan recourdanço ), Catalan recordança (14th cent.), Spanish recordanza (14th cent.), Italian ricordanza (a1294). Compare earlier recording n., recordation n.
