Etymology: In sense 1 < reappeal v., apparently originally after Middle French rappel recall of a banished person, revocation, annulment (see repeal n.). Compare earlier repeal n. In sense 2 originally < re- prefix + appeal n.; in later use probably partly also < reappeal v. (compare reappeal v. 2).

Etymology: < re- prefix + appeal v., in sense 1 after Middle French, French rappeler (see repeal v.1, and compare also rappel v.1; also as reappeler, reapeler (in Anglo-Norman and in one isolated attestation in this sense in Middle French)) and perhaps also Italian rappellare (a1348). Compare post-classical Latin reappellare to appeal again (12th cent. in a British source), to recall (1315, 1330). Compare earlier repeal v.1With reappealing n. at Derivatives compare Italian rappello (1611 in Florio (see quot. 1611 for reappealing n.); 14th cent. in di rappello at once, and similar constructions).
