Etymology: < post-classical Latin recalcitration-, recalcitratio action of kicking out or backwards, insubordination, disobedience (from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin recalcitrāt- , past participial stem of recalcitrāre recalcitrate v. + -iō -ion suffix1; compare -ation suffix. Compare French récalcitration (c1450 in an apparently isolated attestation in Middle French as recalcitracion; subsequently from late 18th cent.).
The action of recalcitrate v. (in various senses); an instance of this.
