单词 reaf
释义

reafn.

Forms: Old English hreaf (rare), Old English reaue (dative), Old English (rare)–early Middle English ræf, Old English–early Middle English reaf, Old English (rare)–early Middle English (in compounds) ref, early Middle English ræue (dative), early Middle English raue (dative), 1800s reef (archaic).
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: reif n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps a spec. sense of reif n. (see forms at that entry), but if so the semantic development is unclear, and the sense does not seem to be paralleled among that word's cognates, although perhaps compare Old Icelandic reyfi fleece (apparently a derivative from the same base), Middle Dutch roof hide, pelt; perhaps compare also robe n.1 and discussion at that entry.
Obsolete (archaic and rare in later use).
Clothing; a garment, esp. a cloak or mantle; (also) an ecclesiastical vestment.
