Etymology: < Italian recitativo accompagnato (1783 or earlier; apparently not dated in dictionaries of Italian) < recitativo recitativo n. + accompagnato accompanied (mid 13th cent.; c1336 in a musical context), use as adjective of past participle of accompagnare accompany v. Compare French récitatif accompagné (18th cent. or earlier; after Italian). Compare earlier recitativo stromentato n., and also recitativo secco n.Compare earlier calques on the Italian term:1771 C. Burney Present State Music France & Italy 285 Signor Rinaldo di Capua has at Rome the reputation of being the inventor of accompanied recitatives.1786 T. Busby Compl. Dict. Music Recitative accompanied, a recitative is said to be accompanied when besides the bass there are parts for other instruments. In plural form recitativi accompagnati after the Italian plural form.
