Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French reconissour ; recognize v.1, -or suffix.
Etymology: Partly < Anglo-Norman reconissour, reconisour, recognisour (13th cent.; < reconis- , reconiss- , etc., stem forms of reconiser recognize v.1 + -our -our suffix), and partly < recognize v.1 + -or suffix. Compare later recognizer n.With the form recognizer compare -er suffix1, and later recognizer n.
Law. Now chiefly U.S.
