Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin recognit- , recognōscere , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin recognit-, past participial stem of recognōscere recognosce v. + -ive suffix, after either cognitive adj. or French récognitif (1768 in the passage translated in quot. 1802).
Of, relating to, or involving recognition or acknowledgement; that recognizes.
