Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin recidivat-, recidivare.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin recidivat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of recidivare to relapse into sin or crime (11th cent.; from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin recidīvus recidive adj.; in later use after recidivation n. Compare Middle French recidiver (of a disease) to recur (a1365), (of a criminal) to relapse (1488; French récidiver ). Compare earlier recidive v.
intransitive. To fall back, relapse; to backslide. Now: spec. to relapse into crime, to reoffend.Apparently rare between the mid 17th and early 20th centuries.
