Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish rebe.
Etymology: < Yiddish rebe Jewish teacher or leader, especially Hasidic religious leader < post-biblical Hebrew rabbī rabbi n.1 The form of the Yiddish word reflects the Ashkenazic pronunciation of the Hebrew, with reduction of the unstressed vowel in the first syllable. Compare rabbin n., Rav n.The form rebbi (which is unparalleled in Yiddish) shows alteration of the ending, influenced partly by an Ashkenazic pronunciation (compare pastrami n., and see discussion at that entry), and perhaps also by -y suffix6.
A Jewish teacher or leader, a rabbi; esp. a Hasidic religious leader. Cf. tsaddik n.
