Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Portuguese réis, reais, real.
Etymology: In α. forms (as plural noun) < Portuguese réis, reais, plural of real (see real n.3). In β. forms an inferred singular. Compare Dutch reis , †reys , singular (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 15981 at sense 1a). Compare real n.3 and rial n.1 2. Compare also milreis n.

1. The former principal monetary unit of Portugal and its colonies, from the mid 15th cent. to 1911, when it was replaced by the escudo. Cf. milreis n.
