单词 re-reformed
释义

re-reformedn.adj.

Brit. /ˌriːrᵻˈfɔːmd/, U.S. /ˌrirəˈfɔrmd/, /ˌririˈfɔrmd/
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, reformed n.
Etymology: As noun < re- prefix + reformed n. As adjective < re- prefix + reformed adj.1 In specific use with reference to the Dutch Re-reformed Church probably rendering Dutch gereformeerd (1834 in this sense (see note); 1571 in broader sense ‘Reformed’).In 1834 various members of the Dutch Reformed Church (Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk) separated from the latter due to theological differences, setting up various ‘re-reformed’ churches; in 2004 these re-merged with the Reformed Church. The new churches were called gereformeerd, rather than hervormd; although both adjectives etymologically mean ‘reformed’ (and, in non-specialist usage, are still used interchangeably), and hervormd, lit. ‘re-formed’, had only been the official designation of the Dutch Reformed Church since 1816, whereas it was previously called gereformeerd (from 1571–1816. The new churches probably chose gereformeerd as their designation not just in order to have a sufficiently distinct name, but also to emphasize their orthodoxy and supposed faithfulness to the ‘true’ Reformed tradition, in contrast to the mainstream Reformed Church, which they considered too liberal. Moreover, in 1906 another (orthodox) faction of the Dutch Reformed Church separated from it, the so-called Gereformeerde Bond (lit. ‘Reformed League’); its members were called hervormd-gereformeerd, lit. ‘re-formed Reformed’.
