Etymology: < Middle French rebaptization (1561 in the passage translated in quot. 1562) and its etymon post-classical Latin rebaptization-, rebaptizatio (4th cent.; 1620 in a British source) < classical Latin re- re- prefix + post-classical Latin baptizatio baptization n. Compare earlier rebaptize v. and baptization n., and compare also rebaptizing n., rebaptism n.
Originally Christian Church.
The action or practice of baptizing a person again; (also as a count noun) a second baptism; a rebaptism. Also figurative. Cf. rebaptizing n.In early use frequently with reference to the view, held by St Cyprian and opposed by Pope Stephen I, that those baptized by heretics should be baptized again before being admitted to the Church.
