单词 berkeley
释义

Berkeleyn.

Brit. /ˈbɑːkli/, /ˈbəːkli/, U.S. /ˈbɑrkli/, /ˈbərkli/
Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: Berkeley Hunt n.
Etymology: Shortened < Berkeley Hunt n. Compare later berk n.Alternative etymology. It has alternatively been suggested that this word derives from an earlier plural noun berkeleys in the sense ‘breasts’ (apparently in turn motivated by Romani bērk breast), attested in the following:1890 J. S. Farmer Slang I. 180/2 Berkeleys..A woman's breasts. [It may be noted that in the gypsy, berk, or burk =breasts.].Although the sense development would be plausible (compare e.g. tit n.6), further evidence for the currency of this earlier noun appears to be lacking.
British slang. Now rare.

1940 A. Bracey Flower on Loyalty i. iii. 49 Lane's face cleared. ‘Tell us, chum.’ ‘And spoil the nice surprise! Not bloody likely!’ ‘You always was a berkeley,’ said Lane cheerfully. ‘Well, I can wait.’
2015 Property Week 16 Jan. 60/2 We're guessing those behind the ad are feeling a bit of a Berkeley.
