Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish bigote.
Etymology: < Spanish bigote (15th cent.), probably ultimately (like French bigot bigot n.) < the expression corresponding to English by God (see by God at by prep. 2b) in one of the Germanic languages, perhaps because the moustache was seen as characteristic of a particular ethnic group, although the exact circumstances are unclear.
Obsolete. rare.
