Etymology: In sense A. 1 < French receptaire (1548 in Middle French) and its etymon post-classical Latin receptarium (1546 or earlier) < classical Latin recept- , past participial stem of recipere receive v. + -ārium -ary suffix1. In senses A. 2 and B. directly < classical Latin recept-, past participial stem of recipere receive v. + -ary suffix1.
