Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, enlarge v.
Etymology: < re- prefix + enlarge v. Compare French rélargir to make larger (1680; 1306 in Old French in an apparently isolated attestation in sense ‘to re-extend’). In quot. 1611 at sense 1 after Italian ringrandire (16th cent.). Compare slightly later renlarge v.
