Etymology: < re- prefix + embrace v.2, originally after Italian †rimbracciare (sporadically attested in the late 14th–early 15th centuries and 1611 in Florio). Compare French rembrasser, (now usually) réembrasser (second half of the 16th cent. in Middle French as rembraizer; rare before the 19th cent.).
