Etymology: < red adj. + poll n.1
1. Any of several Eurasian and North American finches of the genus Carduelis that have brownish streaky plumage and a crimson forehead; esp. (more fully common redpoll) C. flammea (or spec. the subspecies C. f. cabaret: see sense 2b). Frequently with distinguishing word.Several closely related forms, distinguished by size and degree of pigmentation of plumage, have been treated in the past as distinct species but are now regarded as subspecies of C. flammea. The arctic or hoary redpoll, C. hornemanni, is also sometimes regarded as a subspecies of C. flammea. Cf. mealy redpoll n. at mealy adj. Compounds 3.
